No matter what type of wine you choose to indulge in, you should always take a moment to select a glass that will allow the wine to breathe properly. As you pour wine into the glass, contact with the air allows flavors to open up so the wine becomes more fragrant. There are three different types of wine glasses you might use, and the right one depends on the wine you are drinking. Here is a look at the choices for glassware:
- Large-bowled glasses: Wider wine glasses allow a larger amount of air to get into the glass, so they are more appropriate for the big flavors of red wine. Red wines are typically aged, so they have more complexities to unfold as you taste. The larger bowl facilitates swirling and air circulation, which is an important step in proper wine tasting.
- Small-bowled glasses: Because white wines tend to have softer fruit flavors, they are better suited to smaller glasses. White wines do not need to breathe for as long as red wines and are usually served at chilled temperatures. Serving a white wine in a wider glass that is designed for red wine can cause the temperature to rise faster.
- Flutes: A flute should be used exclusively for champagne and sparkling wines. The long, narrow bowl of the glass preserves carbonation without too much fizziness, so the wine is enjoyable in every drink.
A wine glass should always be just that—glass. Plastic glasses may not break easily, but they do not possess the thermodynamic qualities of glass. You may want to steer clear of glasses with decorated bowls for serious tasting, as extra flourishes can get in the way of inspecting visual qualities of the wine. However, fancy glasses will do just fine for parties if it’s all you have available. Never buy wine glasses with no stems, as the stem is necessary to provide the drinker with a handle to hold the glass.
Once you purchase a good set of glassware, find the wines to fill it with at Bianchi Winery and Tasting Room. Check us out online or call (805) 835-4321 for a closer look at our wine selection.

The central coast is a great region for growing some of the best grapes that turn into even better wine. One wine known to grow well in the central coast region is Zinfandel. Paso Robles, especially, is known for the Zinfandel wine it produces. It grows well in Paso Robles because it needs a warm climate to fully mature and wine makers can keep the crop level down, producing a nice grape. Zinfandel has been named “Paso Robles’ Wine.”
We love this video from the “Paso Robles Man” promoting the Zinfandel festival. While the festival has already passed, we’re big fans of this video. Take a look at Paso Robles’ wine and start preparing for the next big wine festival in Paso Robles.
Better yet, come on in to the Bianchi Winery & Tasting Room and taste some of Paso Robles’ best wine. Learn more about what we have to offer by visiting our website or calling us at (805) 835-4321.
